CALIFORNIA HOMEOWNERS

Waiting until January could cost you more.

California’s solar property-tax exclusion is scheduled to end January 1, 2027. Review your solar and battery options while there is still time to evaluate installation timing.

Signing a contract alone does not secure the exclusion. Installation completion and eligibility requirements matter.

What changes for your home?

01

New solar

After the scheduled deadline, a new system’s assessed value may increase annual property taxes. The assessor determines the taxable value.

02

Solar + storage

Qualifying solar storage equipment may be included. Battery eligibility depends on the configuration; standalone batteries are not automatically covered.

03

Already have solar?

Systems that qualified before the deadline keep their exclusion until a subsequent change in ownership. Adding new equipment needs a separate review.

Start with a realistic timeline.

We review system options, provider terms and estimated project timing.

03

Make an informed choice

Confirm eligibility and completion requirements with your county assessor. Timing is not guaranteed.

Before you decide

Is this the 30% federal tax credit?

No. This page concerns California property-tax assessment. The federal homeowner Residential Clean Energy Credit ended for expenditures after December 31, 2025.

Does a PPA or lease avoid the tax?

Do not assume so. Ownership, assessment and your contract determine responsibilities. Ask your provider for its written tax terms and any effect on pricing.

Is the tax based on my full home value?

This change concerns assessment of the added equipment; it does not by itself mean reassessing your entire home. The assessor determines the treatment.

Will my installation finish in time?

We cannot guarantee that. Site conditions, permits, equipment, inspections and county requirements affect timing. Signing or paying alone is not enough.
