Financing, made clear

Your system.
Your way to pay.

Own it with a loan or choose a provider-owned lease or PPA. Compare the benefits, obligations and battery protection before you decide.

01

Loan

You buy the equipment.

The upside
Ownership and control. Financing spreads the purchase cost over time.
The tradeoff
Interest, fees and repairs outside warranty can add to the total cost.
Ask this first
Compare cash price, financed price, APR, total repayment and any payment reset.
02

Lease

You pay to use the equipment.

The upside
Often a lower upfront commitment, with service defined by the provider’s agreement.
The tradeoff
You do not own it unless purchased. Annual increases and home-sale transfer rules may apply.
Ask this first
Compare the full payment schedule, buyout terms, service coverage and end-of-term choices.
03

PPA

You pay for the energy it produces.

The upside
Provider-owned equipment with contracted service; billing may be levelized.
The tradeoff
The rate may rise annually. Grid charges can remain, and a long-term agreement applies.
Ask this first
Compare the energy rate, escalator, billing method and production/service commitments.

Availability and approval vary. A lease or PPA may include annual increases. A PPA can use levelized billing rather than a bill that changes with every month’s production. Solar does not automatically eliminate your utility bill.

The battery question

Payment term ≠ warranty term.

A 25-year payment plan does not automatically provide a 25-year battery warranty.

Buying with a loan

You own the battery.

Manufacturer warranties cover eligible defects and performance. Installer labor coverage may be different. Once coverage ends, repair or replacement costs may be yours.

Powerwall 3: 10-year limited manufacturer warranty.
IQ 5P / 10C: 15 years or 6,000 discharged cycles, whichever comes first.
Compare manufacturer warranties →
Lease or PPA

The agreement defines service.

Provider service can extend beyond the manufacturer warranty. Verify the battery’s covered years, labor, replacement rules and exclusions in your specific agreement.

Ask: “If this battery fails in year 12, who pays for the battery and the labor?”

Solar-plus-storage plans and battery-only plans can have different terms, even with the same provider.

Compare years, capacity retention, cycle or throughput limits, labor, replacement rules and home-sale transfer. Coverage is not a promise that your battery will retain its original capacity forever.

Why consider it

Compare ownership financing with provider-owned alternatives.

Why consider it

A levelized PPA payment with monitoring and service described in the plan.

What to weigh

Review annual increases and ownership. After a PPA buyout, service responsibility shifts to you.

Battery coverage: what to check

Confirm battery-specific coverage in writing. General system service language does not establish every battery replacement condition.

Palmetto / LightReach

Provider-owned solar + storage plans
ABBB LETTER RATING

Not accredited · Palmetto Solar · Charlotte profile

Why consider it

The solar-plus-storage guide includes 25-year approved battery malfunction replacement, maintenance and labor.

What to weigh

Battery-only coverage is different. Match the promise to the exact plan you sign.

Battery coverage: what to check

The separate Energy Backup battery-only program has 10- or 12-year terms and service for the signed term. Renewal can leave labor and equipment costs to the homeowner.

Before you sign

Four questions worth asking.

What will I pay over the full term?

Ask for the total payment schedule, cash price, financed price, APR or PPA rate, fees and any annual increases. Compare the same system and assumptions across proposals.

What happens if I move?

Get the transfer, buyout, prepayment and buyer qualification rules in writing. A provider-owned system is not automatically included in a home sale without contractual steps.

Who answers when something breaks?

Identify the installer, manufacturer, service provider and lender. A lender is not automatically your repair company. Ask who pays for diagnostic visits, labor and battery replacement.

Which option fits me?

If ownership matters most, compare loan and cash costs. If contracted service matters most, compare lease/PPA coverage and lifetime payments. We can review both without assuming one is best for every homeowner.

Compare your actual options.
